Railway as Measure

Nai-Yu Chen

Japanese colonial government built railways and demolished the city walls due to military needs in order to transform Tainan into a modern city; meanwhile, the cubical street pattern had been implanted for improvement. These wide and straight planned roads cut off the organic character and continuity of the lanes and alleys. The scale of the "block" elements produced by this system is quite large, and therefore retains the street patterns of the lanes and alleys developed in the Qing Dynasty. The urban structure of the "island" unit morphology constitutes Tainan's unique block patterns and social contexts. Arcades are installed on both sides of these newly opened streets on the periphery of the blocks. The arcades further shape the traditional alleys of the "blocks" and the living boundaries of the neighborhood , like an invisible wall. In fact, what the Tainan City Government believes is the beginning of the city’s urbanization and the starting point for all changes. The railway has always witnessed the changes in the city’s historical, cultural and geographic landscape. Growing up in Tainan, I don’t think the suture is what Tainan City needs at this stage. The lanes and alleys around the railway are closely intertwined, and so are the communities formed. The railway is not really a wall in Tainan, and definitely not the end of things. The edge of the railway is formed by various movements and demands in daily life. I hope to invest my own design so that this linear parkway can become a place for events to unfold in the future. Nowadays, we can take advantage of the opportunity given by this line to read the patterns, history, and landscape of Tainan alleys, and by walking on the parkway, we can be aware of Tainan.
