Aiko MIYANAGA

2018-19 23 x 16.5 x 4 cm each Work Statement: “The world continues to exist through constant changes” perhaps best describes the creative concept of Miyanaga. For message, featured in this exhibition, Miyanaga shapes naphthalene into a daily object, which will gradually change over time during the exhibition period. Once exposed to air, naphthalene will sublime at room temperature, and slowly loses its original shape with the passing of time. Naphthalene that seems to have disappeared at first glance re-crystalizes beautifully in the glass case, changing its shape. For waiting for awakening - chair, Miyanaga layers transparent resin up like strata, and seals a chair inside, made from naphthalene. The transparent resin with air bubbles that connects to the chair, with just a simple seal on the surface. Once someone removes the seal, the chair starts to slowly sublime, and the white sculpture gradually turns translucent. The non-existent sculpture perhaps can better make people aware of the meaning of existence. For Strata, Miyanaga prints the dates of spring tide on a book made of glass. The tides rise and fall quietly through eternity; since ancient times when men first started living on this land, the tides have continuously set a steady tempo. Miyanaga’s works imply non-existence, displaying the constant changes of time and shapes. Through her works, perhaps we can connect with those invisible places, and perceive eternity in this world that always exists and constantly changes shape. Biography: Born 1974 in Kyoto, Japan, where she is currently based. Graduated from Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts in 2008. Miyanaga is known for her installation using materials such as salt, leaf veins, cracking sound of glaze and especially objects made with naphthalene into the shape of daily commodities. She visualizes time by tracing signs of it's presence. She received the Grand Prize at Nissan Art Award (2013), and the new face award of Minister of Education Award for Fine Arts (2020). Her recent solo exhibitions include "Rowing Style" (Takamatsu Art Museum, Kagawa, 2019), "between waxing and waning" (Ohara Museum of Art Yurinso, Okayama, 2017) and "MIYANAGA Aiko: NAKASORA-the reason for eternity-" (The National Museum of Art, Osaka, 2012). Photographer: Anpis Wang.
