MYSELF

Changyu Yang

The Project 「MYSELF」demonstrate the discrepancy between 「actual self」「ought self」and「ideal self」and show the possible negative emotions they may cause through a story with media by installation and performance. 「E. Tory Higgins」 defined the relation between these various selves—actual, ideal and ought—in his self-discrepancy theory. The ideal and ought selves are our “guides” or standards that we use to organize information and motivate action. The motivational properties of these selves are related to the specific emotions that are associated with the discrepancy between the actual self and either the ideal or ought self. Thus, people’s emotional vulnerabilities depend on the type of self-guide that motivates their lives: dejection/depression when ideal self-dominate and agitation/anxiety when ought self to dominate. And the greater the level of incongruence between the ideal self, ought self and actual self, the greater the level of resulting distress. Therefore, our perceptions or misperceptions of self and the discrepancy between our actual and ideal selves can have dire consequences. People’s mental distress and anxiety comes from this kind of discrepancy. Only after thinking about ourselves and deeply understanding the source of this suffering can we be reconciled with ourselves. When we could correctly deal with the discrepancy and those negative emotions that we can all finally know more about 「MYSELF」. - 「MYSELF」 is a project by Changyu Yang as part of Interprofessional Studio at the Architectural Association School of Architecture (AAIS) March Festival – ECHO AAIS director :Theo Lorenz AAIS Programme Research and Development :Tanja Siems AAIS Studio Master :David McAlmont AAIS Tutor Team :Andreia Garcia, Andy Dean, Argyris Angeli, Heiko Kalmbach, Hila Shemer, Joel Newman, Kyriaki Nasioula, Malgorzata Dzierzon, Mona Camille, Noa Segev, Patricia Okenwa, Renaud Wiser Performer: Shen Shan Musician: Zixian Wang, Tong Gao Make-up: Jie Wang In Kind support :AAIS, AA School Special Thanks :AAIS 21-22 Teams
